Marjoram (Origanum majorana) is an annual or biennial plant sixty centimetres tall, of the Lamiaceae family and native to the Mediterranean basin (Cyprus, Egypt, Turkey).
Marjoram (Origanum majorana) has a woody, spicy, camphoraceous aroma. A calming oil, it has a warming effect on both mind and body. It soothes tense muscles after exercise and is beneficial for occasional simple nervous tension.
Sweet marjoram essential oil is obtained via steam distillation of the dried, flowering plant for commercial use. The scent of the essential oil can be described as warm, spicy and camphoraceous with woody, herbaceous undertones; varying according to where the oil is produced.
Benefits: It is also used as a “nerve tonic” and a “heart tonic,” and to promote better blood circulation. Marjoram oil is used for coughs, gall bladder complaints, stomach cramps and digestive disorders, depression, dizziness, migraines, nervous headaches, nerve pain, paralysis, coughs, runny nose; and as a “water pill.”
Essential oils, properly used, are safe and effective for many routine issues, but there can be bad, even dangerous, reactions from people who are grossly misusing them. A couple of simple tips (not a complete list), includes:
Do not apply undiluted essential oils to your skin.
Do not put drops of essential oil into a bath and then step into it.
Do not ingest essential oils unless advised to do so by a practitioner who is qualified/licensed to prescribe essential oils in this way.
It is not advisable to directly and intensively inhale essential oils for longer than 15-20 minutes.
Essential oils are flammable, and should not be used in any way that involves close proximity to a naked flame or similar fire hazard.
